Nadim Mehanna and his MotorShow team took the NIO ET5 for a comprehensive drive in the UAE.
The ET5 represents one of the most important models in the NIO lineup, positioned as a midsize premium electric sedan designed to compete with established players in the segment while introducing NIO’s own technology-focused identity. Built on the company’s NT2.0 platform, the ET5 combines dual-motor electric performance, advanced driver-assistance systems, and battery-swapping capability in a package that prioritizes refinement just as much as outright speed.
From the outside, the ET5 adopts a clean and modern design language with proportions that lean more toward a sporty fastback than a traditional sedan. The dual-motor all-wheel-drive system combines a front induction motor with a rear permanent magnet motor, producing a total output of approximately 490 horsepower and 700 Nm of torque. Acceleration is strong and immediate, with the ET5 capable of reaching 100 km/h in around 4.0 to 4.3 seconds depending on specification. What stands out, however, is not only the speed itself, but the smoothness of the power delivery. One of NIO’s distinguishing features is its battery-swapping infrastructure, which allows compatible vehicles such as the ET5 to replace depleted batteries with fully charged units in just a few minutes at dedicated swap stations. This system adds an alternative to conventional charging and contributes to the car’s long-distance practicality in markets where the infrastructure is available.
Inside, the ET5 adopts a minimalist and highly digital interior layout centered around a large vertical infotainment display and a compact digital instrument cluster. The design is intentionally clean, with hidden air vents and soft-touch materials helping create a calm and modern cabin atmosphere. The vehicle integrates NIO’s advanced driver-assistance systems supported by a large array of cameras, sensors, and computing hardware designed to support semi-autonomous driving functions. Features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-centering assistance, automated parking, and over-the-air software updates are integrated smoothly into the overall driving experience.
