Nadim Mehanna and his MotorShow team took the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 for a comprehensive drive in the UAE.
With its 6.4-liter HEMI engine, aggressive stance and serious four-wheel-drive hardware, the Rubicon 392 is one of the most unusual performance SUVs on the market.
The first impression is dominated by the sound. Pressing the start button brings the 6.4-liter V8 to life with a deep, unmistakable rumble that immediately separates the 392 from every other Wrangler. Producing 470 hp and 637 Nm of torque, the engine gives the Wrangler an entirely different level of performance, delivering strong acceleration while retaining the low-speed torque that is so important when tackling difficult terrain. Jeep quotes 0–96 km/h in 4.5 seconds, an extraordinary figure for a vehicle designed primarily around off-road capability.
The V8 is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and Jeep’s Selec-Trac full-time four-wheel-drive system. The combination makes the 392 remarkably versatile. On the road, the engine provides effortless acceleration and a sense of immediate power, while in the desert its substantial torque allows the driver to maintain momentum across soft sand and climb steep dunes with confidence. Almost 75 percent of the engine’s peak torque is available just above idle, making that power particularly useful when the terrain becomes slow, steep and technical.
But the Rubicon 392 is much more than a Wrangler with a big engine. Jeep reinforced the chassis and suspension to make sure the additional performance could be used away from the pavement. The 392 features heavy-duty Dana 44 axles, a factory suspension lift, 33-inch off-road tyres and beadlock-capable wheels, while its off-road hardware provides the traction and articulation needed for challenging terrain.
In the UAE desert, this combination becomes particularly impressive. The Rubicon 392 can attack dunes with surprising speed, its V8 providing enough power to keep the vehicle moving when the sand becomes deep and demanding. The elevated suspension and generous ground clearance allow it to crest dunes and negotiate uneven surfaces without constantly worrying about what is underneath. At the same time, its traditional Wrangler shape provides excellent visibility, helping the driver read the terrain ahead.
When the terrain changes from open sand to rocks and technical trails, the character of the 392 changes with it. Its low-range gearing and four-wheel-drive system allow the V8’s torque to be used for controlled climbs rather than simply outright acceleration. Jeep designed the Rubicon 392 to remain a genuine Trail Rated Wrangler, meaning the V8 was integrated without sacrificing the fundamental off-road abilities that define the model.
The Rubicon 392 is also equipped to deal with water, with the original specification offering water-fording capability of up to 82.5 cm. Its approach, breakover and departure angles were also engineered specifically for demanding off-road conditions, allowing the vehicle to climb, descend and cross obstacles that would quickly expose the limitations of an ordinary performance SUV.
Despite its extreme mechanical character, the cabin remains unmistakably Wrangler. The upright dashboard, commanding driving position and familiar switchgear preserve the model’s rugged personality, while modern technology makes the 392 much easier to live with every day. Later versions received a 12.3-inch Uconnect touchscreen, heated seats and steering wheel, a premium Alpine audio system and additional sound insulation, giving the V8-powered Wrangler a more refined character on longer journeys.
There is also a sense of occasion every time the driver gets behind the wheel. The high driving position, exposed-looking bodywork and mechanical feel make the 392 feel fundamentally different from a conventional luxury SUV. Even on paved roads, the V8 soundtrack and immediate throttle response constantly remind you that this is a Wrangler with something extraordinary beneath its bonnet.
For the UAE, that character makes particular sense. The country offers an ideal environment for a vehicle that can move between highways, city streets and demanding desert terrain without changing its fundamental identity. The Rubicon 392 does not merely tolerate off-road driving; it encourages the driver to seek it out, with the power and hardware to make high-speed desert driving as entertaining as technical trail work.
The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 ultimately represents a rare combination of old-school American performance and modern off-road engineering. A naturally aspirated 6.4-liter V8 producing 470 hp and 637 Nm is already enough to make it special, but combining that engine with Wrangler’s four-wheel-drive system, lifted suspension, heavy-duty axles and Trail Rated capability makes the package genuinely unique. It is loud, powerful, capable and unapologetically unconventional, a Wrangler that proves that sometimes the best way to create an unforgettable off-road machine is simply to put a V8 under the bonnet.
