Nadim Mehanna and his MotorShow team took the Maserati MC20 for a comprehensive drive in the UAE.
Designed, developed and built in Modena, the MC20 combines Maserati’s unmistakable sense of style with a lightweight carbon-fibre structure, rear-wheel drive and a new twin-turbocharged V6 created entirely in-house.
The MC20 makes a strong impression without relying on excessive visual drama. Its low, sculpted body has been shaped around aerodynamic efficiency, with clean surfaces, pronounced air intakes and a distinctive rear treatment giving it an unmistakable presence. The butterfly doors are perhaps its most dramatic feature, opening upward to reveal the compact cabin while adding to the car’s exotic character. At just 1,224 mm high, the MC20 has the proportions of a true mid-engined supercar, while its 2,700 mm wheelbase helps give it a planted stance.
At the heart of the MC20 is Maserati’s 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 Nettuno, producing 630 hp and 730 Nm of torque. The engine features Maserati Twin Combustion technology, incorporating a combustion system derived from Formula 1 engineering, and uses a dry-sump lubrication system. It is paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission that sends power exclusively to the rear wheels.
The numbers are serious. Maserati quotes 0–100 km/h in less than 2.9 seconds, 0–200 km/h in less than 8.8 seconds and a top speed exceeding 325 km/h. But the MC20’s performance is not simply about straight-line acceleration. The relatively low weight, rear-wheel-drive layout and mid-engine configuration give the car the balance required to make its performance engaging on winding roads as well as on a circuit.
Much of that character comes from the MC20’s construction. It is Maserati’s first production car to use a carbon-fibre monocoque, with the monocoque itself weighing approximately 100 kg. The complete car weighs less than 1,500 kg, helping produce an impressive power-to-weight ratio. With a 41:59 front-to-rear weight distribution, the MC20 is engineered around the rear-biased balance expected from a mid-engined performance car.
Behind the wheel, this lightweight philosophy becomes immediately apparent. The MC20 feels considerably more agile than its performance figures alone might suggest. Steering inputs are direct, the car responds quickly to changes in direction and the rear-biased setup gives the driver a strong sense of connection with the road. Four driving modes allow the character of the car to be adjusted, ranging from the more relaxed GT setting to increasingly aggressive performance configurations.
The MC20 also manages to retain a degree of everyday usability that can sometimes disappear in cars of this performance level. The GT setting prioritizes a more comfortable and accessible driving experience, making the Maserati suitable for longer journeys rather than restricting it to occasional track use. Its mid-engined architecture is complemented by both front and rear luggage compartments, providing a combined 150 liters of storage.
Inside, Maserati has taken a relatively minimalist approach. The cabin is driver-focused, with the controls arranged around the person behind the wheel rather than overwhelming the interior with unnecessary decoration. Carbon-fibre elements, supportive sports seats and digital displays reinforce the MC20’s performance character, while the quality of materials and attention to detail preserve the sense of Italian luxury expected from a Maserati.
On the roads of the UAE, the MC20 feels particularly at home on fast, flowing routes where its combination of power, stability and precision can be appreciated. Its low driving position and wide stance create an immediate sense of occasion, while the Nettuno V6 provides a distinctive soundtrack and an intense surge of acceleration when the driver opens the throttle. The car remains composed at high speeds, with its aerodynamic design contributing to stability without making the bodywork appear excessively aggressive.
What makes the MC20 especially interesting is that Maserati did not simply create another high-powered Italian supercar. The company used the project to re-establish its own identity in the modern supercar segment, developing its own engine and an advanced carbon-fibre architecture while maintaining the elegance and craftsmanship associated with the Trident badge. Maserati describes the MC20 as the beginning of a new era for the brand, and the car certainly carries that sense of reinvention.
The Maserati MC20 ultimately succeeds because it combines performance with personality. Its 630 hp V6, 730 Nm, sub-2.9-second 0–100 km/h acceleration and more than 325 km/h top speed place it firmly among serious supercars, but the lightweight construction, sophisticated chassis and unmistakably Italian design give it a character of its own. In a segment filled with highly engineered performance machines, the MC20 stands out by delivering something increasingly rare: a supercar that feels both technically sophisticated and genuinely emotional.
