Nadim Mehanna and his MotorShow team took the Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 4MATIC for a comprehensive drive in the UAE.
As one of Mercedes-Benz’s flagship electric models, the EQS 580 4MATIC brings the comfort and technology associated with the brand’s largest luxury cars into a fully electric package.
The EQS immediately stands apart with its smooth, aerodynamic design. Rather than following the traditional three-box shape of a luxury saloon, its flowing roofline, short overhangs and clean surfaces create a distinctive silhouette designed to minimise aerodynamic drag. The result is a car that looks modern and purposeful while remaining unmistakably Mercedes-Benz. Its long 3,210 mm wheelbase also contributes to the spacious proportions expected from a flagship luxury model.
At the heart of the EQS 580 4MATIC are two permanently excited synchronous electric motors, one driving each axle. Together they produce 385 kW, equivalent to around 523 hp, and 855 Nm of torque. The all-wheel-drive system can continuously distribute torque between the front and rear motors, providing strong traction and effortless acceleration in different conditions. Mercedes-Benz quotes 0–100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited to 210 km/h.
What makes the power delivery particularly impressive is its complete lack of hesitation. Press the accelerator and the EQS responds immediately, delivering its substantial torque with almost complete silence. There is none of the drama associated with a high-performance petrol engine, but the acceleration is strong enough to make the car’s considerable size and weight feel surprisingly irrelevant. It is the kind of performance that feels effortless rather than aggressive.
The EQS 580 4MATIC is equally focused on efficiency. Its large battery and highly aerodynamic body allow for a substantial WLTP range, with Mercedes-Benz originally quoting up to 676 km depending on configuration. The car supports DC fast charging at up to 200 kW, while AC charging can be carried out at up to 22 kW when equipped accordingly. Mercedes-Benz states that a suitable DC fast charger can add a significant amount of range in around 15 minutes, making longer journeys considerably easier to manage.
On the roads of the UAE, the EQS 580 4MATIC reveals another side of its character. The combination of instant electric torque, all-wheel drive and a low centre of gravity gives it impressive stability at highway speeds, while its standard AIRMATIC air suspension works continuously to keep the ride composed. The suspension can also lower the body at higher speeds, improving aerodynamic efficiency and contributing to the car’s overall range.
The rear-wheel steering system is another feature that makes the EQS feel smaller than it actually is. With the rear wheels turning in the opposite direction at lower speeds, manoeuvring and parking become considerably easier, while the system also improves agility at higher speeds. With rear-axle steering, Mercedes-Benz quotes a turning circle of as little as 10.9 metres.
Inside, the EQS delivers the kind of technology expected from Mercedes-Benz’s flagship electric saloon. The cabin is spacious, quiet and dominated by digital interfaces, with the available MBUX Hyperscreen extending across the dashboard to create a futuristic visual experience. The emphasis is not simply on displaying information but on creating an environment where navigation, entertainment, vehicle settings and connectivity are integrated into one seamless system.
The silence of the electric drivetrain also changes the character of the interior. Without engine noise or conventional transmission vibrations, the EQS provides an exceptionally calm environment for both driver and passengers. This makes the car particularly well suited to long journeys, where the combination of air suspension, supportive seating and strong sound insulation creates an atmosphere closer to a private lounge than a conventional performance saloon.
Practicality is another important part of the EQS concept. With a luggage capacity ranging from 610 to 1,770 liters depending on the seating configuration, the large liftback design provides considerably more flexibility than its sleek exterior might suggest.
The EQS 580 4MATIC also demonstrates how Mercedes-Benz has approached the transition from conventional luxury cars to electric mobility. Instead of treating electrification simply as a replacement for a petrol engine, the EQS uses the freedom of its dedicated electric architecture to create a different type of luxury car, one centred around silence, space, digital technology, effortless performance and efficiency.
In the UAE, where long highway journeys and high temperatures can place particular demands on a luxury vehicle, the EQS 580 4MATIC offers a compelling combination of comfort and capability. Its substantial electric range, powerful all-wheel-drive system, sophisticated suspension and highly insulated cabin make it particularly well suited to covering long distances in exceptional comfort.
The Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 4MATIC ultimately represents a different interpretation of flagship luxury. With around 523 hp, 855 Nm of torque, 0–100 km/h in 4.3 seconds and a WLTP range of up to 676 km in the original specification, it has the performance to satisfy drivers while maintaining the refinement expected from a Mercedes-Benz luxury saloon.
