هذه السيارة تحمل العديد  من الأسماء: تويوتا 86 في كل من اليابان، جنوب إفريقيا وأستراليا، وتويوتا "جي.تي 86" في أوروبا، وسوبارو "بي.آر.زي" و"سيّون أف.آر – أس" للولايات المتحدة الأميركية وكندا. وهذا قد يكون مربكاً للبعض، ولكن لا يوجد ما هو مربك بالنسبة إلى السيارة بحد عينها، والتي تنحدر من "كورولا ليفين آي.إي 86" المشهورة بمناورات الإنزلاق. وقد تمّ تطوير 86 بالتعاون ما بين تويوتا وسوبارو، وهي تستفيد من محرك "بوكسر" بوضعيّة أماميّة، مع نظام دفع بالعجلات الخلفيّة، ومع مقصورة لأربعة ركّاب بوضعيّة جلوس 2+2
