Nadim Mehanna and his MotorShow team took the GAC HYPTEC HT Ultra for a comprehensive drive in the UAE.
Rather than following the conventional formula for a luxury electric SUV, the HYPTEC HT takes a more individual approach, placing equal emphasis on design, comfort and electric efficiency.
The HYPTEC HT was developed around GAC's AEP electric vehicle architecture and uses the company's X-Soul electronic architecture, creating a platform designed around the requirements of a fully electric vehicle. The Ultra version adds the dramatic gullwing rear doors, giving the SUV a visual identity that immediately separates it from more conventional electric crossovers.
At 4,935 mm long, 1,920 mm wide and 1,700 mm tall, with a 2,935 mm wheelbase, the HYPTEC HT has the proportions of a substantial five-seat SUV while maintaining a relatively low roofline. The result is a silhouette closer to a large coupe than a traditional upright SUV. Slim lighting elements, a clean front fascia and smooth body surfaces further emphasize its aerodynamic character, while the large panoramic roof adds to the sense of openness inside.
The Ultra's gullwing rear doors are undoubtedly its most eye-catching feature. They open upward rather than outward, creating a wide and visually distinctive entrance to the rear seats. Beyond the visual effect, the configuration can make access easier in certain situations, although it naturally requires sufficient clearance above the vehicle. It is a feature that gives the HYPTEC HT Ultra a personality rarely found among mainstream electric SUVs.
Power comes from a rear-mounted permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor producing 250 kW, equivalent to around 335 hp, and 430 Nm of torque. With rear-wheel drive and a single-speed transmission, the HYPTEC HT Ultra delivers its performance in the familiar smooth and immediate manner associated with modern electric vehicles. The official 0–100 km/h figure is 5.8 seconds, giving the SUV more than enough performance for everyday driving and confident highway acceleration.
The rear-wheel-drive layout also contributes to a composed driving character. With the battery positioned low in the vehicle, the centre of gravity is naturally lower than in many conventional SUVs, helping the HYPTEC HT feel stable through faster corners. The emphasis is not on outright sports-car handling, however, but on providing a balanced combination of responsiveness, refinement and comfort.
For the UAE, the electric range and charging system are particularly important. The Ultra is equipped with an approximately 83 kWh battery and an 800-volt electrical architecture. Depending on the testing standard and market specification, claimed range figures vary, with the UAE-oriented specification listed at around 520 km WLTP. DC fast charging can reach up to 280 kW, with a 10–80 percent charging time of around 15 minutes under suitable charging conditions.
In real-world UAE driving, as with any electric vehicle, range will naturally depend on speed, temperature, air-conditioning use and driving conditions. The important point is that the HYPTEC HT combines a reasonably large battery with an 800-volt system capable of making fast charging a practical part of long-distance EV use. That is particularly relevant in the Gulf, where highway journeys can cover considerable distances.
Inside, the HYPTEC HT takes a clear step toward the premium end of the market. The cabin is clean and contemporary, with a large central infotainment display, a digital driver's display and a head-up display helping to keep essential information within easy reach. The minimalist dashboard design allows the technology to become part of the overall interior rather than dominating it.
Comfort is another important part of the HYPTEC HT's character. The Ultra specification brings leather-appointed seating with electric adjustment, heating, ventilation and massage functions for the front occupants, while the rear seats offer generous space and reclining capability. The long wheelbase contributes to useful rear legroom, making the HYPTEC HT suitable not only as a driver's SUV but also for passengers on longer journeys.
The cabin also places considerable emphasis on sound and air quality. A premium Dolby Atmos audio system, panoramic roof and sophisticated climate and air-filtration functions create an environment designed to remain comfortable during extended periods behind the wheel. In the UAE, where summer temperatures can place considerable demands on a vehicle's climate-control system, these features become particularly relevant to the everyday experience.
Practicality has not been forgotten in the pursuit of a sleek design. The HYPTEC HT offers a large rear luggage compartment, with published figures around 670 liters with the rear seats in place and up to approximately 1,800 liters when they are folded, depending on specification. The five-seat layout therefore gives the vehicle a useful balance between passenger comfort and cargo-carrying ability.
Technology extends beyond the screens and entertainment systems. The HYPTEC HT incorporates a range of driver-assistance functions, including adaptive cruise control, lane-related assistance, blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking and a 360-degree camera system. These systems are intended to make everyday driving easier and provide additional assistance in traffic and during low-speed manoeuvring.
On the road, the HYPTEC HT Ultra's character is defined more by smoothness than drama. Electric torque arrives immediately, while the single-speed drivetrain keeps acceleration seamless. The suspension is tuned with comfort in mind, and the substantial wheelbase helps provide a stable ride on highways. At the same time, the low-mounted battery and rear-wheel-drive configuration give the SUV a more planted character when changing direction.
The UAE environment also highlights another aspect of the HYPTEC HT. Its combination of strong air-conditioning, comfortable seating, quiet electric propulsion and fast charging makes it well suited to the long highway journeys that are common across the Emirates. It is primarily a road-focused SUV rather than an off-road vehicle, and its lower ride height and coupe-inspired design reflect that positioning.
What makes the HYPTEC HT Ultra particularly interesting is the way it combines several different ideas in one vehicle. It has the practicality of a five-seat SUV, the silhouette of a coupe, the quietness of an electric vehicle and the visual theatre of gullwing doors. None of these elements is entirely new on its own, but their combination gives the HYPTEC HT a character of its own.
After our drive, the GAC HYPTEC HT Ultra comes across as an electric SUV that places considerable emphasis on individuality without sacrificing everyday usability. Its 335 hp electric motor provides strong performance, while the long-range battery, fast-charging capability and spacious cabin make it suitable for daily use as well as longer journeys. The gullwing doors and distinctive exterior design then add an element of personality that sets it apart from more conventional electric SUVs.
The HYPTEC HT Ultra ultimately represents a different interpretation of premium electric mobility. It does not rely solely on performance figures or technology to make its case; instead, it combines those elements with comfort, practicality and an unmistakable design. For UAE drivers considering a premium electric SUV, it offers a combination of smooth performance, modern luxury and distinctive styling that gives it a clear identity in an increasingly competitive segment.
