Volkswagen used the annual Wörthersee gathering to present to the world its concept of the hybrid Golf. Witness the Golf GTE Sport, with two seats, a drivetrain sporting a rally-bred turbo engine and two electric motors, and C-pillars.

As wild as it is on the outside, the Golf GTE Sport’s interior takes things even further into sci-fi land. Through the two-passenger speedster’s gullwing doors—with openings that extend deep into the roof, GT40-style—you’ll find a dual-binnacle cockpit with a carbon-fiber bulkhead splitting driver from passenger.

Under the GTE's bonnet lies a motorsport-derived powertrain, with 295 hp and 400 Nm of petrol power supplied by the front mounted 1.6-liter turbocharged motor from Volkswagen's Polo R WRC. This is supplemented by two electric motors, the first of which is mounted inside the six-speed gearbox housing and produces 107 hp and 330 Nm of torque. The second is mounted on the rear axle, and produces the same 107 hp as the front motor, with 60 Nm less torque.
